ERP Software for Transport Companies in India: What to Look For

A transport company is a chain of small handoffs: a booking, a lorry hired from the market, a loading check, a POD, a freight bill. An ERP for this business has to follow that chain, not a generic sales and stock flow. Here is what to look for before you commit.

Start from the consignment, not the invoice

In most trading businesses the invoice is the centre of the system. In transport it is the consignment: the LR, the vehicle, the route, the people who touched it and the money that moves because of it. If the software cannot show you one consignment from booking to payment on a single screen, you will keep returning to spreadsheets.

The modules that matter

  • Consignment and LR management with branch-wise numbering and views.
  • Trip management: vehicle, driver, route, status and expenses per trip.
  • Lorry hire: market vehicles, hire amount, advance, balance and approvals with an audit trail.
  • POD upload and approval, linked to the consignment, so billing is not blocked by missing paperwork.
  • E-way bill tracking and validity reminders.
  • Billing, party ledgers, vouchers, bank and cash entries, with GST handled correctly for freight.

Questions to ask a vendor

  1. Can I see one consignment from booking to final payment without opening another screen?
  2. How are hired vehicles and advances recorded, and who approves a payment?
  3. What happens when a POD is late or rejected?
  4. Does the system work across branches, with each branch seeing only its own data unless allowed?
  5. Can drivers or branch staff update status from a phone?
  6. Can I export all my data at any time?

Custom or ready-made?

A ready-made product such as Brokrify gets a transporter or broker running quickly and costs less. A custom ERP makes sense when your process has unusual rules, many branches or integrations with systems you already run. Many companies start with a product and add custom modules around it.

We run a logistics operation ourselves, which is why transport software is one of our strongest areas. If you want a second opinion on a quote from another vendor, we are happy to give one.

Next step: write down your own flow, from first call to final payment, in ten lines. It is the best brief you can give any vendor, including us.
