How to Choose a Software Development Company in India: 9 Questions to Ask

Most failed software projects do not fail because of technology. They fail because of a mismatch in expectations between client and vendor. These nine questions bring those mismatches to the surface before you sign.

Questions about the work

  1. Who will actually build this? Ask for the names and roles of the people on your project, not just the sales contact.
  2. Can we speak to a client with a similar project? A reference call tells you more than a portfolio page.
  3. How will we see progress? Look for working demos every one or two weeks rather than a big reveal at the end.
  4. What is your process for changes? Every project changes. The question is how that is handled and priced.

Questions about ownership and risk

  1. Who owns the source code and the data? Get this in writing, along with access to the repository.
  2. Where will the application be hosted, and who holds the credentials? You should hold the master accounts.
  3. What happens if we part ways? Documentation and a handover process should be part of the agreement.

Questions about life after launch

  1. What is included in support, and for how long? Clarify bug fixes versus new features, and response times.
  2. How do you handle security and backups? Ask about access controls, backup frequency and a restore test.

A vendor who answers these clearly and without discomfort is usually one you can work with. Vague answers are a signal in themselves.

What to look for in the proposal

  • A scope document with screens or modules listed, not just a total price.
  • Milestones tied to deliverables, with payments linked to them.
  • A named project manager and a communication rhythm.
  • Assumptions and exclusions written down.

Location matters less than it used to. Teams in Coimbatore, Noida, Varanasi or Nagpur work with clients across India every day. What matters is clarity, responsiveness and a track record you can verify.
